Every movie fan out there knows what Grindhouse is. For this article I’ll be focusing on the movie called ‘Grindhouse‘ which is basically a two-movie featured film by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. Since I’ve missed it in the movies, I decided to watch it home as it should have been played. The one after the other, with no breaks and no disturbances. Sadly, I had ‘Death Proof‘ long time before ‘Planet Terror‘ and I couldn’t help it. Besides I couldn’t actually get into the ‘Grindhouse’ concept since the movies were released separately in my country. Anyhow, long story short, I’ve watched both films in the right order and here’s what I liked and what I didn’t.

Death Proof

What I liked about Quentin Tarantino’s “Death Proof”:

  • The fact that Tarantino’s plays again a secondary character. He loved doing that.
  • Tarantino’s fictional cigarette brand called ‘Red Apple’. These exist on almost all of his movies.
  • The strong and memorable characters in the movie.
  • The Uma Therman lookalike/stuntwoman who actually got one of the leading roles in the movie.
  • The old movie (b-movie) film effect along with the movie previews intro.
  • The girl talk scene where it’s a pretty long single-shot without any ‘cuts’.
  • The fact that Stuntman Mike explains the meaning of ‘Death proof’ as Samuel L. Jackson (Jules) did with the word ‘Pilot’ in Pulp Fiction.
  • The unusual camera takes.
  • The fictional Texas Ranger ‘Earl McGraw’ who was also in Tarantino’s “From Dusk Till Dawn” and “Kill Bill Vol.1“.
  • The latina twins playing on both films.
  • Dr Dakota Block character on both movies.
  • The movie’s poster.

What I didn’t liked about “Death Proof”:

  • Tarantino trying too hard to make a movie like his previous movies.
  • The pretty long car chase scene.
  • The quick and meaningless ending.

Planet Terror

What I liked about Robert Rodriguez’s “Planet Terror”:

  • The fictional trailer ‘Machete’. By the way, Rodriguez decided to make the fictional trailer into a movie!
  • The plot which reminded me a lot of Tarantino’s older movies.
  • The fact that Tarantino is again a secondary character. This time he is one of the bad guys.
  • The 10 minute air time that Bruce Willis had.
  • Making a movie about zombies cool again.
  • The comedy element in a zombie movie.
  • The one-gun-legged character.
  • The fictional Texas Ranger ‘Earl McGraw’ who also plays in this movie. This time we get to know his daughter as well.
  • The ‘Missing Reel’ part. Yeap, an actual piece of the movie is missing and you lose some of the plot.
  • Naveen Andrews’ accent.
  • The latina twins playing on both films.
  • The radio station playing a song in memory of ‘Jungle Julia’ from “Death Proof”.
  • Dr Dakota Block character on both movies.
  • Fergy’s (from Black Eyed Peas) big movie debut.
  • The movie’s posters.

What I didn’t liked about “Planet Terror”:

  • The mistake they did in the poster where Cherry Darling is missing her left leg in the poster where in the movie she is actually missing her right. Apparently the fixed this later on in some posters where in other’s you can spot the error.
  • The ‘Missing Reel’ part. I know it is both good and bad since you lose some parts of the movie.

So, there you have it. Judging from the amount of points that I liked vs those which I didn’t you can tell that I really liked both films and sure they deserve a spot in the Top 250 movies.
