Thanks for the tutorial! I'm officially in love with Weave ;) I thought I would sorely miss Google Sync, but I was wrong. I like the fact that the data is mine!

After a couple tries, I got Weave 0.2.7 working with Dreamhost. To avoid the extra folder level, I created a WebDAV folder weave.mydomain.com/user and told Weave to connect to http://weave.mydomain.com/ . Weave doesn't seem to use other directories besides /user .

@BookwormDragon, the server or anyone in between never gets to see your unencrypted data. To get access to your data, an attacker would have to sniff the WebDAV password (easy if you're not connecting over https) and break the 256-bit AES encryption of your data (very hard, depending on password strength). Of course it's safer over https. Metadata, e.g. about the browsers you used to connect, are stored unencrypted on the server, so it's still a privacy issue.

Registrations for the Mozilla service are closed ATM, so running it elsewhere is the only option for newcomers.

@BookwormDragon, by using this method it is no safer than any other method. As a matter of fact it could be worse if you are not saving your data through a secure connection. This method simply keeps all your data on your OWN server rather than mozilla's servers. If you are comfortable in keeping your data on mozilla's server then I suggest using the default, intended way.

Just to make sure I understand, it is safe to sync your passwords with this method, because the info isn't decoded/unencrypted until it reaches your browser, and it is recoded/encrypted before it's sent back to the server, right?
And for those who keep getting the invalid username/password error, try removing/adding the trailing slash after your username in the server URL. This worked for me. On the first computer, I started with the trailing slash, and once I removed it, it worked. On the second computer, I started without the trailing slash, but received the error until I went and added the slash. After that, it worked just fine, syncing between both computers perfectly.

@Otto, @b Thanks guys for the tips!

@Prasinos, I'm not sure if mozilla plans to develop such features. I know Foxmarks does that and it is really useful. As a matter of fact I am using foxmarks but again hosting my bookmarks on my server :)

Greate article, weave works like a charm.

Is there a way to access the stored data outside of firefox? (like e.g., from a webpage). If not, do you know if this feature is planned?

Otherwise, an online bookmarks manager (like Foxmarks) is still needed and then weave becomes superfluous...
